PE & Sports Premium
The PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, physical activity and sport available to pupils.
At Upton Primary School, we want every child to experience high-quality physical education and have opportunities to be active, develop confidence, learn new skills and participate in sport.
How we use the funding
Our plans are based on the needs of Upton’s pupils and the five areas identified by the Department for Education:
- increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport;
- engaging all pupils in regular physical activity and sport;
- raising the profile of PE and sport as part of whole-school improvement;
- providing a broader and more equal range of sports and physical activities; and
- increasing participation in competitive sport.
We consider how the funding can improve opportunities for all pupils, including children with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those who may be less likely to participate in physical activity or sport.
Monitoring impact
School leaders monitor the use and impact of the funding through:
- participation in lessons, clubs and competitions;
- pupil and staff feedback;
- lesson observations and learning walks;
- reviews of staff professional development;
- assessment information, including swimming and water-safety outcomes; and
- evaluation of the quality, reach and sustainability of the provision.
The Governing Body scrutinises the school’s plans, expenditure and evidence of impact. Governors consider whether the funding has been used appropriately, what difference it has made for pupils and how improvements will be sustained.

Swimming and water safety
Swimming and water safety form part of the national curriculum. Upton provides swimming instruction through appropriately qualified instructors and monitors whether pupils meet the three national curriculum requirements.
For the 2025 to 2026 Year 6 cohort:
- 82% could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
- 82% could use a range of strokes effectively, including front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke; and
- 82% could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
We use this information to identify pupils who require further support and to inform future swimming and water-safety provision.
Further information about the national PE and Sport Premium requirements is available in the Department for Education’s PE and Sport Premium guidance for primary schools.
Children that have not yet achieved the minimum requirement of being able to obtain the national curriculum standard are eligible to attend the After School Swimming Club at a discounted price. The after school swimming club is held at Sun Lane, Featherstone Sports Complex and Pontefract Swimming Pool. For more information about the after school club please contact the Aquatics team
